The 5th Leading Cause of Death

The 5th Leading Cause of DeathObesity and being overweight are now the fifth leading causes of death worldwide.

Nearly three million adults die each year as a result of being overweight or obese. The World Health Organization’s data discloses that over 40% of diabetes, 23% of heart disease, and up to 40% of certain types of cancer is attributable to being overweight or obese.

Being overweight is commonly considered a problem in developed countries with higher income levels, but it is also on the rise in low-income nations. The epidemic has gotten so bad that two-thirds of the globe’s population live in nations where being overweight results in more deaths than deaths caused by being underweight (malnourishment).

The obesity epidemic is particularly troublesome in the United States. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), over one-third of all U.S. adults 18 years and older, are obese. What may be even more alarming is that the obesity rate among children two (2) to seventeen (17) years of age is approaching 20%.

The rates have skyrocketed during the last 25 years. In 1985, 13 states had obesity rates of less than 10% with no state having a rate higher than 14%. Fast forward to 2010 and there are no states with a lower overall average of less than 20%.
