American Children & Obesity
Obesity is more prevalent in the United States than any other country. The United States Department of Health and Human Services estimates that 300,000 deaths a year are associated with obesity and that in the year 2000 alone, obesity cost the national economy $117 million.
Obesity is no longer just affecting adults; it is now troubling our children. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, in the past 20 years the number of overweight and obese American children has more than doubled.
Data compiled by the Prevalence of Obesity Among Children and Adolescents: United States, Trends 1963-1965 through 2007-2008 states:
- Percent of adolescents age 12-19 years who are obese: 18% (2007-2008)
- Percent of children age 6-11 years who are obese: 20% (2007-2008)
- Percent of children age 2-5 years who are obese: 10% (2007-2008)
Adding the numbers together… 48% of our children are obese!
Some experts are saying that today’s obese children could be the first generation of Americans with a life expectancy less than their parents!
