Is Adrenal Fatigue Causing Your Weight Gain?
The adrenal glands are two separate glands that are perched above each of our kidneys. They are responsible for the famous ‘fight or flight’ response that floods our body with adrenaline when we need it. The lesser-known hormone from the adrenal glands is cortisol. In the old days when all we had to worry about was protecting our families from predators – cortisol used to assist us by raising our blood sugar, blood pressure and immune system function in times of need.
Known commonly as ‘the stress hormone’ cortisol has become a problem for many people – especially women – as stress permeates every facet of their lives. With so much stress and so much cortisol flooding into your body only one of two things can happen. Either your cortisol levels are permanently high causing adrenal fatigue, or they bottom out and are very low. Both are bad news for your body.
Cortisol is quite a multifunctional hormone. Like many of the other hormones in the blood, it has several uses that are crucial to the proper functioning of the human body. It helps the adrenaline give us a quick burst of power if we need it to respond to a stressful situation. It also decreases our propensity for pain, heightens our memory and helps maintain a healthy balance in the body.
Suddenly it doesn’t seem like such an unimportant hormone after all! In fact, if your hormone imbalance indicates high cortisol levels, you’re in for a rough time.
Raised cortisol in the bloodstream eventually causes rapid weight gain, muscle degeneration, blood sugar problems, bone density decrease and concerns over focus and concentration ability. This happens because the body’s relaxation response does not kick in, due to repeated cortisol production.
Low cortisol levels are also dangerous – which happens when the body’s natural production of the hormone slows down, thanks to flooding and over-use. These symptoms, while not concerned with weight gain are just as serious.
The key is to have all of your hormones working in harmony with each other towards a common goal – weight loss. If you have excess cortisol in your bloodstream, losing weight is incredibly difficult.
A healthy diet, regular exercise and plenty of sleep are the secrets to balancing your cortisol levels. Not only will you see rapid weight loss, but your stress levels will be significantly reduced.
The adrenal glands play an important part in balancing your body, and each hormone has a role to play. Sometimes due to modern day stress, our bodies can become overloaded – which results in conditions few people even know exist. All they know is that they’re overweight, stressed an unhappy.
